2015 WFTDA Playoffs Weekly Rankings

Welcome back everyone.  Sorry for the delay this week, but I was preoccupied with a small vacation to not so sunny and warm Las Vegas.  Seriously I’ve been there twice in the span of about 6 months and it rained both times.  That’s enough about me, lets focus back on the rankings.

Not much change this week.  We have NW Arkansas, Paper Valley and Shasta entering the Top 100 and we also saw Ft. Wayne move up a few more spots.  They are scoring at a rate that will put them right there for a D1 playoff spot.  They are currently showing 5 future bouts on FTS with the Naptown and Ohio bouts standing out as great opportunities to take the big step to D1.  As I said it was a quieter week so here are the rankings.

2015 WFTDA Playoffs Weekly Rankings & WET Revisited

It’s been a couple weeks, but trust me the wait will be worth it.  Before I get going though I must share a bit of Derby Math excitement.  Today Flattrackstats.com did a shout out on their Twitter and I can say the result has been amazing.  People from all over the world have now checked out Derby Math.  As always there are two easy ways to follow the updates.  The first is to like/follow me at facebook.com/derbymath and the second way is to follow directly thru WordPress and receive an email every time a new post is up.  I’m feeling pretty good right now and with the travel season really getting up to speed be prepared for lots of updates.

Tonight’s post will feature a complete listing of the weekly rankings (FTS results + released WFTDA Rankings for bouts since July 1, 2014), with all 211 teams being featured after my complete audit of the database.  In addition to that, I’m going to take another look at the WET (WFTDA European Tournament).  In my audit, the most time I spent updating was in regards to that tournament.  And the end results were shocking.

So as a quick recap, WET occurred the weekend of November 14th-16th and featured 15 bouts among 10 WFTDA teams.  It was a great opportunity to make a statement and really get a good idea for those of us in North America to find out how these teams matched up.  Bear City was just coming off of a great run in D2 Playoffs and several of the other teams had made successful trip across the pond earlier in the year, so it was setting up to make for some interesting movement in the rankings.  My weekly rankings even reflected that, especially for Stockholm and Helsinki as they both appeared primed to be in the battle for a 2015 Playoffs spot.  But then I did my audit and something very interesting happened.

Now if you were already aware of this, feel free to skip ahead, but if not you may be interested in these notes.  After contact FTS to confirm what I was seeing, I was shocked to learn that only 8 of the 15 bouts at WET were WFTDA sanctioned for rankings purposes.  My initial reaction was why would WFTDA allow something like this at their tournament, especially after all the discussion over the last couple of years of WFTDA needing to do something to help balance the European teams rankings.  This would have been a perfect opportunity for that to have happened, but it just didn’t.  In the end though, in my rankings at least, you can see the jump Stockholm and Helsinki had by having only their highest WFTDA points count end up counting.  I had originally counted all three bouts for both teams, but after the audit only one bout each counted (both nice wins over Bear City) and it shot them way up the rankings.  Crime City on the other hand had the complete opposite reaction as they dropped all the way down to #99 this week.  How it will all eventually play out is yet to be seen, but this sure was an interesting development.

So with the audit complete here are the latest weekly rankings.  Killamazoo and OK Victory also made some gains by having bouts come off my rankings.  And the bottom of the Top 100 had some big shake ups as well.  But without blabbing too much, here are my complete rankings (all 211 of them).  As a note, if you are aware of a team not listed here that you believe should be here contact me at derbymath@gmail.com and I’ll look into it for you.

2015 WFTDA Weekly Playoff Rankings

Things are starting to heat up in the WFTDA world and this past weekend will be the start of a very exciting next 5 months.  We saw a Top 15 team show its absolute dominance and really make me nervous about one of my 2015 predictions.  We then saw a couple of D2 Playoff teams go at it, but if Playoffs were today they both would be on the outside looking in.  And finally we saw a team lose, but gain 15 spots in the Weekly Rankings.

First things first, Jacksonville seriously had me worried about my prediction of no teams scoring 600 points this year.  Taking on an over-matched Ft. Myers team it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility that Jacksonville would put up the magic 600.  We are talking about a Jacksonville team that put up 711 to start their 2014 year after all.  At the end of the day though it was “only” a 505-26 victory for Jacksonville and the prediction is safe for another weekend.  Jacksonville keeps their hopes of getting a Top 12 ranking alive, lets face it that being a #3 seed is immensely better than being a #4 seed come playoffs. This bout lowered their points total slightly, but looking ahead to Jacksonville’s schedule (at least what is listed on FTS) they look very primed to go after that Top 12.

Our second bout of focus saw Killamazoo take out some revenge on Grand Raggidy with a 225-160 victory.  For Killamazoo this was the highest WFTDA points total of the season as they scored 299.81 points (reminder that my rankings are based on released WFTDA rankings and FTS scores).  This moved them up 4 spots in the rankings this week, but Killamazoo will still have a lot of work to do in order to get back in to the Top 60 as they still have a rough score from a bout with South Bend last July to deal with.  They do have a packed schedule coming up, but the key could be a March 21st bout with Ohio.  They don’t need to win, but a really bad performance could be too much for them to overcome for the 2015 Playoffs.

And finally we had North Star take a squeaker over Sioux City 136-134.  Sioux City, despite the loss, jumped all the way up to #85 and North Star actually lost a spot and is now #78 this week.  This helps me put some faith in the rankings.  If two teams are able to battle that closely and then still be ranked that close tells me at least part of the rankings is correct.  I don’t think either of these two teams have what it takes to get up to the Top 60 this year, but I fully expect both of them to put forth some great battles.
