2015 WFTDA Weekly Rankings

Hey all.  As promised I will provide my rundown of Dust Devil and Clover Cup, it just wont be today.  I’m a bit under the weather, but I still wanted to get all of you the rankings today.  As I see the growth of Derby Math I just have to put in the reminder that my rankings are based on Released WFTDA Rankings and results posted to Flattrackstats.com.  This will cause things to be off a little bit from actual WFTDA rankings, but I still truly believe this can be used as a tool for leagues.  Also, and I will discuss this more later this week, when teams such as Des Moines United enter into things I have to try and figure out what WFTDA weight their opponents get by playing them.  So until they are officially in the rankings their opponents may be a bit off as well.

Here are this weeks rankings and I am hopeful that I will post a much more in depth recaps Thursday or Friday this week.

WFTDA 2015 Playoffs Weekly Rankings – Lots of Moving and Shaking Going On

Welcome back to the one and only weekly WFTDA rankings.  Things have sure picked up and now we are starting to see the teams that are legit and those that maybe need to get to work.  Before I even get into my info I have to promote two excellent articles that Derby Central published this week.  First is their recap of the Quad City Chaos, which you can find here http://www.derbycentral.net/2015/03/2015-quad-city-chaos-tournament-recap/.  The second is their article regarding coaching in the derby world (http://www.derbycentral.net/2015/03/the-mystery-of-coaches/).  I think this is a part of the sport that will (needs to?) improve as the sport grows.  Im of the philosophy that a good coach can coach anything, but there will always be weaknesses when doing a sport that may not be their natural sport.  But the biggest area is bout/game management.  A great skater may be able to teach others how to skate better, but that doesn’t mean they can manage a bout.  Its a special skill, but in a growing sport it will take some time for more and more great coaches to emerge.

This week their were just so many great bouts and Im going to touch on as many as I can, but admittedly I probably wont be going in depth on any particular team like I had the past few weeks.  First off, Jacksonville and Atlanta played a thrilling 173-170 bout.  Jacksonville moves up a spot this week and now the biggest question for these two is if they can get all the way up to #3 seeds or are they looking at #4 seeds again.  The second bout I want to spend a minute on was a little battle for Iowa between Team United (in their first WFTDA sanctioned bout) and Old Capitol.  Team United took a comfortable 240-87 win and that places them all the way up at #17 this week.  With only 1 bout in they have plenty of movement coming for them, but I think it will be rather safe to say they will end the season a D1 team if they get enough bouts in.  The last 1-off bout that drew my attention was Arch Rivals complete domination of Nashville.  On Saturday Nashville took down a St. Chux team on the cusp of D1 168-154, but then on Sunday they were on the receiving end of a 345-36 beat down from Arch Rivals.  That cost Nashville 13 spots this week and they are now appearing at #50.  St. Chux used the close bout to move up 4 spots to #36 and Arch Rival moved up 5 to #16.  Oops one more bout I forgot about, Detroit’s 233-90 shocker over Ohio.  Now, most of us knew Detroit was possibly the best team in D2 Playoff history (this may be true going forward as well), but I don’t know how many of us expected this result.  Detroit is now looking at a possible #5 seed for D1, while Ohio will be in a battle to hopefully get a #7 seed.

And then we had the 4 teams in the Quad City Chaos: Boston, Rideau Valley, Steel City and Toronto.  What a great little weekend for all 4 teams, and even better for the fans.  All 6 bouts saw the margin of victory under 55 and it was very nice to see Rideau Valley continue their success from D2’s last year and show that they are right there with some D1 regulars.  They moved up 21 spots this week and this weekend should help them get over that loss to Calgary last August when Calgary was still up and coming and greatly underrated.

We have the Dallas Clover Cup this weekend.  8 teams (all currently ranked Top 83) in a true tournament with possibly the best game being an opening round bout between Dallas and Kansas City.  I’ve been high on Dallas after they missed playoffs in 2014 and this will be a great chance for them to show just how far they have come.

WFTDA 2015 Playoffs Weekly Rankings – Welcome back to the hunt Cincy!!!

Welcome back to the weekly 2015 WFTDA rankings and as we get started I just have to take care of some admin items first.  With WFTDA releasing their February 28th rankings I went back an updated all the bouts that had previously been entered for early March with the new bout weights (reminder, I use WFTDA release rankings and Flattrackstats.com posted results).  So there has been some movement simply due to that.  Just look at the four How the West Was Won teams.  All of them advanced since last week by having bout weights increase.

Also, I just need to send a big shout out to my peeps in Canada.  Last week, for the first time, Canada actually provided the most visitors to the site.  Very cool stuff.  And dont forget that you can now follow me and keep posted on more updates on Twitter @derbymath.

Now on to this week’s rankings.  As you will see I have 235 teams listed, that is all the teams that I am showing have completed a WFTDA sanctioned bout since July 1, 2014 and thus apply to the 2015 playoffs.  It would take a lot of space to discuss all of them, but I’d be lacking if I didnt highlight one performance in particular.  That would be none other than the Cincinnati Rollergirls.

To say their 308-96 win over NEO this weekend was much needed would be an understatement.  Their last WFTDA win was way back in September of 2013.  With that losing streak they had seen their ranking drop to 96th in the February 28th WFTDA release (86th in Derby Math Rankings).  But all of that is in the past, and this result allows for hope for the future.

This win advanced them all the way up to 66th in the Derby Math Rankings and just an 8 point average out of 60th and the final D2 Playoff spot.  With plenty of season left remaining, and having only 3 bouts currently counting towards the playoffs, Cincinnati is back in the hunt for a playoff spot.  Im projecting that it will take a WFTDA average of 240-245 in order to qualify for playoffs and Cincinnati could easily get back up there with one more performance like what they just had against NEO.  With at least 6 bouts coming up (Ann Arbor, Blue Ridge, Twin City, Ft. Wayne, Nashville, and Red Stick) they have to like their chances to get their average back up to that total.  Sure is going to be a fun 3+ months of derby watching their comeback.

2015 Weekly Playoff Rankings – Arizona’s Rise Continues

The weather is changing, at least here in Wisconsin, and the derby action around the world continues to heat up.  This week saw action from 11 current Top 100 teams and the addition of 4 new teams to the rankings this week.  And the biggest news of the weekend is the continued rise of Arizona in the derby world.

Now in fairness to Arizona, their rise started last season with their run into the D1 playoffs that culminated with their 5th place finish in their respective playoff.  In fact the only reason they were not ranked higher so far this season in my rankings was 521-125 loss they suffered at the hands of Texas during those playoffs.  But it was this past weekend and their “How the West Was Won” that brought them back to probably their correct rankings.

Arizona welcomed a nice mixture of teams with Brewcity, St. Chux and Calgary all making the trek down to sunny Arizona for a round robin set of play.  Arizona put forth an effort that not only resulted in 3 wins (by an average of 208 points) but also a WFTDA points average of 436 points.  That moved them up 10 places from last week and now has them situated in 20th place.  Being in the Top 20 could end up being very important as a #5 seed is much more likely to beat a #4 seed than a #6 is to beat a #3.  That allows a team to reach the semi-finals and ultimately means they are just one win away from Champs.  Arizona is far from done and the next few months they are staying very busy (Skate to Thrill in Missouri, Tinseltown Showdown in California, and Bestern in Colorado) and playing some of the best competition there is.  Come July we will really know where they stack up and I’ll be curious to see how high up the rankings they can go.

The other three teams at “How the West Was Won” had some very mixed results.  Brewcity went 0-3 and while they were able to keep the points good enough from a WFTDA perspective against St. Chux and Calgary their bout against Arizona only got them about 121 WFTDA points and made their return to D2 Playoffs a bit tougher than before the weekend started.  As of now I am showing them all the way down in 72nd.  St. Chux finished the weekend 1-2 and that cost them 11 spots.  The drop is almost more a product of just how tight things are in that part of the rankings.  32nd and 48th are only separated by about 20 points and we are going to see a huge battle down the stretch for those final D1 playoff spots.

And one team that is looking more and more like a D1 teams is Calgary.  By going 2-1 in the weekend they move up to 39th and made a very nice statement with their 137-103 win over St. Chux.  At this point it all could come down to their schedule from here until July and if they can get the right match ups to maximize the WFTDA points needed to make it to D1.  As of right now their website shows a bout on June 6th against a team to be determined, so we will have to just do a wait and see on them.

Lots of talk there and I could keep going, but there are plenty of weeks yet to come.  Here are the Top 100 rankings as of today.

*As a note, I am now up on Twitter and will send out weekend updates on some of the top scores impacting the rankings as they happen.  Just follow me @derbymath

2015 WFTDA Playoff Weekly Rankings – Finally Some Action

It has been a nice little break, but it appears we are finally back in the game.  We had 22 (now that the Wasatch bouts appeared to be non-sanctioned) this past weekend and the promise for many more this upcoming, including a very nice little round robin featuring Arizona, Brewcity, Calgary, and St. Chux.  Hopefully all these bouts (I dont care Im sticking with it, it just has a nice ring to it IMO) will lead to continued movement thru the rankings and the overall excitement of derby will pick back up.

This week we saw some very nice movement in the Top 100 and we also welcome two new teams into the rankings (Pikes Peak making their initial mark in 55th and Fargo making a return to the Top 100 after falling out recently).  Under normal circumstances the 11 position gains made by Demolition City and Sacred City would earn top honors for the week, but the biggest winner was Emerald City thanks to their huge wins over Bellingham and Silicon Valley at the Wild West Showdown in Bremerton, WA.  On the flip side we saw Lowcountry’s run in the Top 100 ended after dropping 38 positions due to their 159-85 defeat at the hands of Richland County.

As I mentioned this upcoming weekend will see more bouts and it will be nice to see how the next 4 months play out and who will be in the 2015 playoffs.
