Spudtown/Tinseltown/Southern Discomfort Breakdowns

As a little bonus this week here are a little more info in regards to three tournaments this weekend.  To start lets take a bit of a look at Southern Discomfort (hosted by Columbia).

Team # of Bouts Tourney Record Average WFTDA Score Change in Weekly Rankings
Jacksonville 2 2-0 540.67 +1
Charlottesville 2 2-0 407.43 +2
Columbia 3 3-0 375.21 +11
Brandywine 3 2-1 291.38 0
Ft. Myers 2 1-1 276.45 +28
Green Mt. 3 1-2 266.57 +17
Calgary 3 1-2 250.69 -10
Roc City 2 0-2 244.72 +6
Charlotte 1 0-1 150.20 -4
Killamazoo 3 0-3 108.65 -20

As you can see Jacksonville again dominated a tournament, but the real stories here were the rise of Columbia and the fall of Killamazoo.  Columbia (with the help of some great scheduling) moved up a very solid 11 spots and started to get a little separation in their effort to make D1 playoffs this year.  Killamazoo on the other had about as bad a weekend as any team in derby.  Not only did they go 0-3 but they dropped 20 spots this week and have just about been eliminated from the D2 playoff groups this year.  Nothing is impossible, but I just don’t see them making it this year.

Team # of Bouts Tourney Record Average WFTDA Score Change in Weekly Rankings
Angel City 2 2-0 581.60 +3
Arizona 3 1-2 351.93 -2
Santa Cruz 3 2-1 306.30 +2
Sacred City 2 0-2 299.06 +3

The Tinseltown Showdown again proved to be a great little tournament.  Angel City again showed their dominance, but for 3 of the 4 teams there were positive moves in the rankings and one of the two spots Arizona lost was due to Oly joining the fray.  I also applaud both Angel City and Sacred City for not playing each other as both teams probably recognized that neither team was going to be able to benefit from it.  It is funny, but sometimes that is the best way to go.

Team # of Bouts Tourney Record Average WFTDA Score Change in Weekly Rankings
Boulder County 3 3-0 386.68 +19
Sac City 3 2-1 363.43 +11
Treasure Valley 3 1-2 294.78 -5
New Hampshire 3 0-3 56.24 -45

Last, but not least this week, I will look at part of the Spudtown Knockdown.  The best way to look at the tournament is that there were two little round robins that took place.  Im just looking at the one with teams in the Top 100.  As you can see above New Hampshire has taken a huge step backwards.  With three huge losses they fell all the way to #111 in my rankings.  That will completely take them out of the 2015 Playoffs.  The other three teams really took advantage of this drop, even though I’ll admit that I thought Treasure Valley would have held up a bit better against Boulder County and Sac City.  But all three look to be at least solid D2 teams this year and all could still get up to D1s.

Next week I’ll break down The Big O, and I cant wait as 8 of my top 20 teams will be in action.  With all action being streamed at http://ecrg.com/bigo/live/ for free!!!

2015 WFTDA Playoffs Weekly Rankings – IT’S ON!!!

One can only hope that this past weekend set the tone for things to come as the drive for the playoffs officially just got real for some teams.  If you want a bout by bout recap, again I’ll encourage you to visit Derby Central as Left 4 Deadwards again did an excellent job capturing the action across the world.  But, if you want to know what the results really meant you’ve come to the right place.  This weekend saw 82 of the Top 100 teams change rankings, including a huge change in the Top 10.  We also see the battles for 40 and 60 really starting to take shape.  (Later this week I’ll provide a quick synapses of the three big tourneys in the usual format: Tinseltown Showdown, Spudtown Knockdown, and Southern Discomfort)

This weekend recap has to be started with the huge bout between Minnesota and Windy City.  Minnesota took a huge win and moved up 6 spots, while the loss saw Windy City drop 6 and now residing at #13.  This was highlighted due to such the craziness that is the WFTDA rankings.  Minnesota beat a WFTDA #11 Windy City on 4/25/15 that had a WFTDA Weight of 3.78, compare that to when Gotham beat then WFTDA #3 London on 7/12/14 with a WFTDA Weight of 3.76.  That right there supports something I’ve said all along, play your bouts later in the WFTDA calendar to maximize your points.

But Minnesota wasn’t the only Top 10 team to make a move as Angel City was able to use a successful weekend to move up 3 spots and slot in at #7 in my rankings.  The rest of the Top 20 saw minimal movement, except HELLO Oly.  With their first WFTDA bout in the books they enter the rankings this weekend at #18.  Now whether or not they will get in the necessary number of bouts (and then actually participate in Playoffs) remains yet to be seen their win over Jet City shows they are still relevant in the WFTDA world.  The rest of the Top 30 saw minimal changes with a few bouts here and there, but in that 30-70 range (heck even up to 100) things got a bit crazy.

From 30-100 we saw 11 teams move more than 10 spots this week, and that doesn’t include the 45 spots New Hampshire fell that dropped them all the way to #111.  Columbia moved up 11 spots to #34 and their average should be enough to get them into D1 if they remain at the 310 score.  This D1 battle is going to be great to watch this year as I currently have 36th-48th separated by just over 10 WFTDA points.  That amount is easily obtainable depending how my many current bouts your team has already played.  And with Pikes Peak, Boulder County, Helsinki, and Sac City all entering into the fray this week I can’t wait to see who ends up in and who misses out.

One team that unfortunately looks like they may be on the outside looking in on that party is Calgary, who dropped 10 spots and is now at #52.  Their loss to Charlottesvile (who is currently ridiculously under-ranked by WFTDA) really hurt their cause and will make it hard to jump past all those other teams and get back to D1 range.  Hope is not lost, but they have work to do.

D2 this year is going to be a battle just to get in.  Look at it this way, OK Victory who played in D1 last year is currently 60th and Bear City who had their great run at D2’s is in 59th.  But the curious thing is the score gap we have opening up between 63rd (North Star thanks to their huge win over Omaha and 21 rankings move) and 64th (Omaha).  That 15 point gap could be difficult for some teams below to make up.  Think of it this way, Omaha has currently played 9 bouts with a score of 235, in order to get up to the 250 after their next bout (FTS listed as No Coast) they would need to score 385 WFTDA points in their next bout.  No Coast is currently ranked WFTDA #42 and Omaha would need to beat them and score 57% of the total points.  That just shows how hard it can be to move your average a lot if you have already played a lot of bouts.

The rest of the Top 100 also saw some good movement that just might impact D2 playoffs, but also might be a little too late for some.  Crime City moved all the way up to #73 this week and with only 2 bouts on the books could still change their average a good amount, but did they move up so much because Stockholm was over-rated?  That we will have to wait and see.  Green Mt also made a really nice move up to #76, but with 8 bouts in hand already it may just be too late for them.  Going the other way, Ft. Wayne really hurt their chances this weekend (Detroit really is a rankings killer), Killamazoo lost 20 spots, and New Hampshire fell off the grid completely.

Its going to be a great run over the next two months and a lot can happen, just remember every bout counts and one bad bout can ruin a whole season.

Weekly WFTDA Rankings & Skate to Thrill Recap

Sorry for the delay in getting this out, but with WFTDA releasing their latest rankings today I felt it was more important to wait an extra day and get it right than be out on time.  There was a ton of action this past week and I will touch on a lot of it, but for starters lets take a look at the teams that participated in Stake to Thrill, hosted by St. Chux.

Team # of Bouts Tourney Record Average WFTDA Score Change in Weekly Rankings
Arch Rival 3 3-0 600.67 +3
Demolition City 3 1-2 372.06 +11
No Coast 3 2-1 325.97 +5
Arizona 3 2-1 322.36 -2
St. Chux 4 1-3 289.23 -4
Naptown 3 1-2 269.00 -1
Burning River 3 3-0 262.91 +9
Junction City 3 1-2 243.91 +17
Twin City 3 1-2 235.88 +4
Tiger Bay 4 1-3 221.80 N/A

I don’t know if anyone was really surprised by most of the results at Skate to Thrill, but holy crap did Arch Rival just dominate.  (For complete bout recaps be sure to check out Derby Central) With this weekend Arch Rival moved all the way up to #13 in the weekly rankings and had an average WFTDA score over 220 points higher than any other team there.  As a whole this really was a successful weekend for almost all of the teams as St. Chux was the only team who saw their ranking decrease by more than 2 spots and one of those spots was from Demolition City who jumped up 11.  This despite a 1-2 record.  All in all it was a great weekend and this is quickly turning into a very solid tournament in the Midwest for those teams in the bottom half of D1 or in D2.  For just being their 2nd year St. Chux does an absolutely fabulous job.

In other action we had Madison pulling double against Jacksonville and Atlanta, and unfortunately the results were not good for them.  Two big defeats saw them drop 10 spots in the rankings, slotting them all the way down at #37.  It may have been a bit much to ask of the going up against two Top 15 teams, but I still feel Madison will do well to make it to D1 playoffs and pull in a 5-7th place finish once there.  Another big mover this week was Boston who moved up 7 spots with wins over Steel City and Ohio.  This put them up into 21st and well above that all important 28th ranking line for playoffs.  Like I have said many times, you do not want to enter D1 playoffs as a 7th seed or higher.  That gives you a best case scenario of facing a #1 or #2 seed as a reward for winning your opening game.  OUCH!!!

Finally this week I’ll leave you with a little bit of analysis.  A few weeks back I had a little discussion on Facebook about what i felt were going to be the D1 and D2 point averages needed to qualify this year.  I’m going to re-affirm my belief that it will take between 255-260 points to make it to D2 and (even though it may be a bit high) I’m sticking with 305-310 to make it to D1.  WFTDA scores go up as the year goes on, but at the same time making your average go up gets more difficult.  If you have already played 9 bouts and your average is 200, your next bout needs an average of 210 just to move your overall average to 201.  So making a big move could be difficult if your team has already played a lot of bouts.  That is important to think about, as every single point matters.

I hope you all enjoyed the recap and below find the TOP 100 this week.

2015 Weekly WFTDA Playoff Rankings – Slow week, whew!!!

With only 10 sanctioned bouts reported to FTS last weekend you would think it would be an easy week for me.  Well, it kind of was for the most part.  But this will also give me a good chance to talk about a struggle with my rankings, and how Im going to overcome it.  But, it will truly make my rankings now completely match those of WFTDA.  But as I’ve always said, Im trying to be close so this can be used as a tool for teams and not fact.

You will see this week Helsinki and Twin City both had drops to their rankings despite winning.  The biggest problem is that they played teams not yet ranked on the released WFTDA rankings.  I ran into a very similar problem with all of the Des Moines United opponents.  Going forward Im going to continue to list the bouts as 0.5 WFTDA score until that team gets their first released rankings.  I will then go back and adjust all of their bout weights and that should help things get back to square.  With that we will see some shifting of rankings as we go forward and teams get their first released rankings, but again it is the best for everyone.  So stayed tuned.

The biggest match-up this last week was Rose City taking on Rocky Mtn.  The result was a good beat-down of 356-139 for Rose City.  Above all else this just shows the huge gap in talent at the top of WFTDA.  This is a sort of gap I would expect between teams 40-60 spots apart in the rankings.  Yet this was #2 and #12.  And in fact it barely affected their WFTDA averages.  That is just wild.  It is things like this that make me lean more and more towards a format similar to what is going on with the British Roller Derby Champs.  (See their format here http://www.britishchamps.com/tournament-structure/)  They are basically running things like how they do their soccer structure.  I really think this may not be the worse idea for WFTDA to look at something like this.  Geography would be a bit of an issue, but there may be ways around that.

Without too much other key bouts going on Im going to keep this short, so enjoy.

Clover Cup and Dust Devil Statistical Recap

Happy Friday everyone.  As promised I am feeling a little better and am ready to bring you a more in depth recap of the Clover Cup (hosted by Dallas) and the Dust Devil (hosted by Tucson).  If you enjoy this format and type of information please let me know and I will use it for other tournaments/invitationals as we lead up to the 2015 playoffs.

Our first look today is going to be at the Clover Cup and how much the this weekend helped or hurt their WFTDA rankings.  The biggest story in my opinion coming into this tournament was always going to be how would Dallas do a year after getting knocked out of this tournament early last year.  They responded by winning the 2015 Clover Cup and never really being challenged along the way.  The other story of note, 2014 Clover Cup winners Gold Coast loss two lopsided bouts and were eliminated in quick fashion this year.  These are two teams trending in completely different directions and it just goes to show how much can change in a year in WFTDA.  While we still don’t see a lot of change in the Top 15-20, from 20-80 it just seems like change is the name of the game.  Below I have a full run down of how the 2015 Clover Cup impacted each of the 8 teams that participated.

Team # of Bouts Tourney Record Average WFTDA Score Change in Weekly Rankings
Dallas 3 3-0 421.93 +9
Kansas City 3 2-1 364.12 +12
Houston 3 2-1 298.20 +10
Blue Ridge 3 2-1 289.88 +11
Big Easy 3 1-2 270.54 +10
OK Victory 3 1-2 266.73 -2
NW Arkansas 2 0-2 205.35 -25
Gold Coast 2 0-2 161.71 -10

In the Dust Devil, 4 of the 7 teams saw their weekly rankings as a result of the invite.  Treasure Valley and Boulder County led the way by going both going 3-0 on the weekend and even Tucson saw a little bump in their average despite only winning 1 of their 3 bouts.  The team that probably left the most on the track was Sac City.  They won 2 of their 3 bouts, out scored their previous WFTDA average, but still lost a spot in the weekly rankings.  This is a team that has been very consistent in the WFTDA points they are scoring per bout, but against teams they are better than they really need to rack up the points.  Playing Junction City and Duke this past weekend could have been good opportunities to wrack up huge wins, and while their wins were nice they needed to be bigger to optimize the WFTDA points available.

Team # of Bouts Tourney Record Average WFTDA Score Change in Weekly Rankings
Treasure Valley 3 3-0 307.25 +5
Boulder County 3 3-0 268.63 +6
Sac City 3 2-1 254.57 -1
Tucson 3 1-2 247.91 +5
Junction City 3 1-2 179.91 +46
Crossroads City 2 0-2 102.20 -19
Duke 3 0-3 72.18 N/A

I hope you all enjoyed this new little feature and I can’t promise I will do it for every weekend event(right now I can pretty much only guarantee Brewcity’s Midwest Brewhaha), but if you have an Invite or Tournament you would like me to put this together for please let me know. I already have the data I just need to reformat it to put it out there. As always thanks for the support and remember to follow me on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
