Updated DerbyMath Rankings – Sweden Attacks Again and D2 #10 Seed Mayhem

Welcome back again DerbyMath fans.  It was a crazy weekend and for the 2nd weekend in a row it was a team from Sweden making the big moves.  I have promised a new feature and it will be here this week, just not yet tonight.  You will notice a new column in the rankings below, Average Opponent Rank, and it will work just as it sounds.  It will show the average (released) WFTDA rank of a teams’ opponents thru the year.  Unfortunately I didn’t get all the formulas and coding done for tonight so check back later this week for it to be added.

Now, on to the rankings tonight.  As you can see below, Stockholm jumped up 9 spots and is now in position to be a #4 seed.  We also saw Windy City drop down to a #6 seed and if playoffs were today they would be matching up with possibly Philly or Minnesota in the first round.  Its crazy how much things can change in a year.  There were a few other D1 changes, but the last one of note was Tri-City dropping to #41 and Sacred City moving up to #40.  These teams are well within the Score margin of error (I’m estimating a flex of 4-6 points max depending on when teams played in playoffs last year) and it could easily swing either way.

The big D2 story is No Coast moving up to #59 (#9 Seed) and into what I consider a safe spot to make it to Playoffs.  The #10 seeds though are really up for grabs.  Brewcity and Brandywine seem to have the inside track, but they are not outside of the margin of error in the rankings (4-6 points) and we could see Calgary, Bear City, Ann Arbor or Sin City sneak in there as well.  I wish I could be more sure of those rankings, but its just that close and should tell teams you cant take one single bout off and every point matters.

There is one final team I want to discuss as I have them currently as a #7 Seed, its Sun State.  They had a great trip earlier in the year but then recently played some bouts back home against teams that were not yet ranked.  The issue is I dont know what bout weights are going to be given to those and it really could impact their rankings a lot.  I feel they are safe to be D1, but they could be anywhere from a #5 to #9 seed.  We will just have to wait and see.

Updated DerbyMath Rankings – Hello Europe!!!

Welcome back everyone and thank you all for the huge response and viewership last week.  With so many new visitors I want to take a chance to just remind everyone of exactly how the DerbyMath Rankings work and the philosophy behind them.

1.  Bout Weights are pulled from only the released WFTDA Rankings.  If you see it on their website I use it.  This means I do not currently use the weights from the “quiet period” during the playoff season.  I recognize that is an issue when it comes to average scores but I am hopeful it wont impact the ranking positions very much.

2.  Currently I only use sanctioned bouts that are posted to Flattrackstats.com.  Again this is another limitation that I hope will be corrected in the future, but for now it is what I have.

3.  In regards to new teams coming into the WFTDA/DerbyMath Rankings I will use the first team weight listed for all of their previous bouts.  With not knowing the weight given to teams in the Strength Factor Challenge program, this number will at least give teams a close proximity to what the challenge factor was.

And finally the original philosophy behind the rankings.  I wanted to create something that teams could use thru the entire season to see where their rankings for the upcoming playoffs would be.  WFTDA releases rankings on a rolling 12 month period, but the playoffs are just the rankings from July to June.  So these rankings will reset come July 1 and then going forward they will represent the 2016 Playoffs.  I also wanted to be able to do something that was able to be replicated by others.  I know that my numbers aren’t perfect, but I truly hope they are close and have provided some guidance for teams.  Only 2 more weekends to go and we will see just how good this method was.

Now on to the rankings.  Europe thru down the hammer this weekend.  London played their first bouts since last years playoffs and showed that they are still worthy of a #1 Seed as they jumped 8 spots this week to take over the final #1 spot from Bay Area.  Based on this past weekends results I have to believe we have to believe they belong up there as they were their usual dominating self.  The other big mover was Sweden’s Crime City.  Up 47 huge spots, they had three very large wins at Beach Brawl over teams that gave them enough points to move up a lot in the rankings.  They also have very few bouts (by comparison to most teams) so a big weekend like this allows for huge moves in the rankings.

In regards to teams making D1 or D2 (DerbyMath Rankings) I did show a little movement.  In addition to Crime City moving into the D1 picture I am also showing No Coast taking advantage this weekend and moving up to a D1 #10 Seed.  Going the other way though were Rideau Valley, who didn’t play this weekend, and Santa Cruz, who bravely took on London in a 317-26 loss.  Santa Cruz should get a lot of credit for taking on a such a tough team, but it will likely cost them a spot in D1 as they would have currently been a #9 Seed without that bout.

Then on the bottom of D2 we still see a nice cluster of teams.  SoCal is still being removed so it will take a Top 61 to get there on the DerbyMath Rankings.  There was a lot of movement among the rankings, which tells me the teams are very equally matched, but it appears that Sin City may end up on the outside looking in now.  Going 1-2 over the weekend wasnt too bad, but their lost to Sacred was much below what they needed and ultimately it appears to have dropped them out of the playoffs.

I hope you all enjoy the rankings and I will keep them going as best I can.  Just remember, these are guidelines and should not be used as official WFTDA Rankings.  So rule of thumb, DON’T BOOK YOUR AIRLINE TICKETS BASED ON THESE RANKINGS!!!  And for all you newbies you can follow me at facebook.com/derbymath and I will post there whenever a new blog is up.

Updated Weekly WFTDA Rankings, BrewHaHa Recap, Other Thoughts

So we are getting closer and closer to the 2015 WFTDA Playoffs and the action continues to be hot on the track.  This past weekend we had a total of 49 sanctioned bouts, with 25 of them occurring at Brewcity’s Midwest BrewHaha.  In addition to that I was lucky enough to catch a Gotham bout (as if you didnt already know, but Bonnie Thunders is pretty good, lol) and a little Quadzilla apex jumping action (he was at least 3 feet off the ground).  Whenever one finds yourself in a bit of a derby funk, watching some great quality derby is a great way to get out of it.  But Im going to start with one trend that I noticed that goes outside the numbers and focuses a bit on safety.  Something needs to be done with the consistency of clockwise blocks being enforced.

Now I know that the rules were changed during this year to focus more on the impact of one of those blocks, but when I was watching a large number of really good officials consistently calling it differently I recognized that it still needs work.  I also saw that this is actually probably one of the more dangerous hits, especially for jammers.  Numerous times I saw a jammer being stopped by a wall only to get blocked backwards and no call occur.  My biggest concern is that most of the time because the jammer began the hit leaning forward that their feet would end up trapped under them as they were blocked backwards.  Im sure as WFTDA and the officials continue to work on things it will be called more consistently, but i just hope that nobody ends up with an injury due to this.

I know I dont normally get into those kind of things, and its out of my system now.  Now onto the rankings.  Initially lets take a look at the teams that took place at BrewHaHa.

Team # of Bouts Tourney Record Average WFTDA Score Change in Weekly Rankings
Gotham 2 2-0 897.23
Arch Rival 3 3-0 690.20 +2
Minnesota 3 1-2 460.03 -1
Tampa 3 2-1 429.35
Detroit 3 3-0 421.45 +1
Santa Cruz 3 3-0 410.34 +11
Houston 3 2-1 367.82 +7
Ann Arbor 3 3-0 347.67 +6
Madison 3 0-3 346.00 +2
Steel City 3 0-3 327.58 -2
Brewcity 3 3-0 323.52 +4
North Star 3 0-3 266.14 +2
Treasure Valley 3 1-2 255.61 -5
Grand Raggidy 3 1-2 233.91
Ohio 3 0-3 218.08 -7
Old Capitol 3 1-2 184.38
NEO 3 0-3 106.64 -18

As you can see by the above chart, BrewHaHa was very good for a lot of teams.  Gotham showed their complete dominance again, in fact their WFTDA Score for their bout against Minnesota was the highest of the year earning them over 1,050 points.  The next biggest statement was clearly Arch Rival.  All year they have been putting together a really good campaign, but this clearly put them on the map as a real contender to make it to Champs this year.  Ann Arbor was probably the next biggest surprise, aided greatly by their destruction of NEO, and they are now in a position to possibly make D2 Playoffs.  A week ago I did not have them even in the conversation, but if they have a few more good bouts yet in them they could sneak one of those final spots.

One of the coolest stats to come out of this is the fact that both Madison and North Star lost 3 bouts, and still moved up in the weekly rankings.  This shows just how much every point matters, and how bouts in June are worth more than bouts earlier in the season.  North Star actually played Brewcity for the second time this playoff season, and just looking at the bout values is a bit eye opening.  On August 2nd, 2014 Brewcity was ranked 49th and had a WFTDA weight of 1.72.  When North Star played them again on June 6th Brewcity’s ranking was lower (61st) but their WFTDA weight was all the way at 2.01.  Before the bouts even started, the June 6th bout was just worth more despite Brewcity’s ranking being 12 spots lower.  Had the score been the same for both bouts North Star would have scored 43 more WFTDA points on June 6th compared to August 2nd.  If you are a team looking to really maximize your ranking this has to be considered when developing a playoff season schedule.  And honestly, unless you are in the Top 20 you really need to be considering this.

Now lets look at the big picture.  Im going with a little bit of a new format so I hope you like it.  And for our purposes I have removed SoCal from the Playoff picture as they will not be competing this year.  However there are other teams (none in the Top 60) who have not currently met the WFTDA requirements that I will still show in the Top 100.

As you can see below the #1 Seeds look to be pretty well set at this point as the Bay Area to Denver gap is pretty large and would take a lot to make up at this point.  The #2s also look to be pretty solid, but if any of them falter too much the next couple weeks they could find themselves as a #3, but really the difference between a #2 and #3 in the big picture isnt all that much.  The real question is who is going to be that last #3 seed.  London, Atlanta and Rocky Mtn are all within striking distance of each other and whoever gets that final #3 seed has a much better chance of making Champs than if they end up a #4 seed.

Other than Charm City I would say the rest of the #4s and #5s are safe and can look forward to facing each other in the first round of playoffs.  And as we saw with the battle for the final #3, the final #5 is very much up in the air.  The current #6 and #7 seeds are full of wild cards.  Des Moines United, Glasgow, Stockholm and Sun State (I am least sure of Sun State’s score due to the unknown ranking scores coming from their Paradise City bouts) all have less than 5 bouts which means one more bout with a score very different than their current could really swing their average much more than the other teams around them.  I think all of the #8 and #9 seeds are safe for making D1 Playoffs, they may mix up a little bit but these look to be safe teams.  The #10 seeds are very interesting.

First we have Oly and nobody knows what the heck is going on there.  Then we have Ohio, who as you see above did not perform at a D1 Playoff team level at BrewHaHa.  And those are the safer of the #10 seeds.  Anyone ranked between 39-44 (heck even Sacred at #46 or Boulder County at #48) could take those last two #10 spots at D1.  Its going to be great to watch how this all plays out down the stretch.

D2 is its usual cluster of very equal teams.  This is the reason I actually prefer D2 playoffs over D1 playoffs.  Just look at the 20 teams i currently have listed as going this year.  From Columbia at #41 to Emerald City at #55 you could basically throw a blanket over them and they could all move up or down a seed on any given weekend.  I also think #56 Jet City can start their D2 Playoff planning and they will most likely be a #8 seed.  Now the last 4 spots, OH BOY!!!  I wouldnt say any of the 4 teams in that final group are safe, but I think the Brewcity, Brandywine and Sin City will all make it in.  The real battle is for that last spot.  Calgary, Ann Arbor and OK Victory are all separated by about 1.3 points.  That number is well within my margin for error based on how I use the WFTDA released rankings and not the official WFTDA calculator.  If there was a year that WFTDA could expand to 70 teams (eliminate Champs and just do 7 seeded tournaments, i.e 1-10, 11-20, etc) this would be the year.  Could you imagine and opening D1 playoff of Jacksonville vs. Philly with the winner moving on to Gotham instead of Stockholm vs. Rideau Valley winner?  Im just saying I’d prefer 7 tournaments with all teams separated by 10 spots instead of the current format.  But again I digressed.  Below please find the teams that are in, and the rest of the Top 100 as well.

Updated WFTDA Weekly Rankings

Hello everyone and welcome back to the weekly WFTDA Rankings for the 2015 Playoffs.  We are getting oh so close that the end is clearly in sight.  We are still getting some movement, but as we get further and further along its a lot less than it was earlier in the season.  The real battles are shaping up for this last month of action as there are some really close races among key spots.

The first battle is going to be for that important #12 ranking.  By being #12 you get a #3 seed and get a first round match-up with a #6 instead of a #5 and then get a #2 in the semis instead of matching up with a #1.  Im showing 4 teams (Arch Rival, London, Atlanta, and Rocky Mtn.) all within 20 WFTDA points.  That is a lot to make up at this stage, but if someone struggles and someone else hits a huge win its not insurmountable.

The next battle will be for those Division 1 #10 seeds.  Just look at all the teams ranked between 38-45 right now.  Those are some stellar teams and some of them will not be D1 this year.  Now we don’t know what Oly is going to do, or if any other teams will opt out this year, but that is a gaggle of teams.  But the biggest wildcard is actually the team Im showing at #37 (Stockholm).  With only 3 recorded bouts they have so much more movement ahead of them.  And with 3 big bouts ahead at the 2015 East Coast Derby Extravaganza their ranking is very much up in the air.

The battle to get in at the bottom of D2 may actually have less teams involved, with only about 6 teams really in play for the final 2 or 3 spots, it is going to be just as intense.  And this is a perfect story of how important a whole year of quality bouts is to your ranking.  Even if you are on your game right now, you can get left behind.  As of today Brewcity is on the outside looking in, despite having wins over 2 teams that would be in (Brandywine and Outfit) in the last 3 weeks.  For them a good showing at the Midwest BrewHaHa this upcoming weekend may be enough to put them over the hump and back into D2.

Whatever happens over the next few weeks it sure will be fun to watch.  And we just keep getting closer to see if this whole thing known as the Derby Math Rankings works or not.  Its been a crazy 11 months since I’ve started working on this stuff and I sure hope that the rankings can hold some weight when this all done.  And as I struggle to finish out the year of this, I just really hope that it pays off.
