Updated Derby Math Rankings – Thru 3/27

Why hello there derby fans.  It has been a long time, this I am well aware, but I come to you today with good news and updated rankings.  The weather is warming, well at least the snow is gone here in Wisconsin (until tomorrow anyways), and the derby season is starting to get into high gear again.  I am also stoked to get my coaching on a bit again and help one of the Brewcity Home Teams go after a championship.  Its amazing how the thought of bench coaching gets the juices flowing again.  But enough about me, lets talk rankings.

I am putting forth a huge disclaimer for the 5 teams that have played Quebec (Muddy River, Capital City, Toronto, Tri-City, Royal City), you are currently under-ranked.  Whenever a new team gets brought into the WFTDA world I have a bit of a delay in getting their Weight correct, so you will be updated with the next release after the next WFTDA Rankings are released.

Other than that the rankings are beginning to show teams that are looking for big gains this year, and teams that are dropping off.  From some quick observations I have to say that it appears to me that Crime City is off to an incredibly strong start and a dark horse to make a run at a Top 12 finish this year.  On the other end Glasgow and Demolition City have both had incredibly tough openings to their 2016 season and it will be interesting to see if they can turn it around.

Top 50 Defensive Efficiency Bouts 2015-16 Season (So Far)

So a couple of weeks ago I presented the Top 50 Offensive Efficiency Bouts of 2015-16, with a little time on my hands tonight I present the Top 50 Defensive Efficiency Bouts of the season.  This may have a few surprises in it as no matter the rank it is always possible to hold a team to few enough points to make the list.  In fact, 16 of the bouts came against opponents not ranked in the Top 20 (WFTDA Rank at time of bout).  We even have a few teams on the list that didn’t qualify for playoffs this year.

8 of the Top 20 performances came from either London or Victoria.  That should not come as a surprise of anyone who watched the 3rd Place bout at Champs this year, in fact that bout ranked in the Top 16 FOR BOTH TEAMS.  On the other end, Helsinki was the first team to appear twice on the list as an opponent.  It is hard to really hold that as knock against them as the two teams they lost two were both had a win at Champs.

Top 50 Offensive Efficiency Bouts 2015-16 Season (So Far)

With the new Offensive Efficiency Ranking I thought it would be fun to provide you with the Top 50 OE bouts so far.  As a quick reminder OE is based on total points scored and the opponents strength (WFTDA weight).  The usual suspects will be here and one thing you will notice is that there are very few super high (400+) point bouts.  With the formula in place there just were not a lot of those type of bouts that also carried enough opponent strength to make the list.  Case in point, Hard Knox (Knoxville, TN) put up 554 on R.O.C.K. (Lexington, KY) but will not make this list (in fact it is not even in the Top 150) due to the strength of R.O.C.K not being very high.

Some may surprise you, and it is important to remember that this isnt based on opinions but purely on math.  If you have any questions or bouts you think should have made the list, contact me I’d love to hear from you.  These are just for WFTDA sanctioned bouts (according to FTS) since 7/1/2015.

Halfway Rankings and NEW Offensive/Defensive Rankings

Hello again my friends, its been a long time.  Truth is, its been too long.  But don’t worry, I came back with something that I am sure you will find interesting.  As you read this you will see two charts, the traditional Derby Math Rankings thru the first 6 months of the WFTDA season and then a new chart in which I incorporate Offensive and Defensive Efficiency Rankings.

The good news is that the traditional Derby Math Rankings received a little face lift as well.  In addition to number of bouts and score from the past rankings, I have added average opponent ranking (at time of bout), average points scored, and average points allowed.  As with last year I will be following the WFTDA July-June season so all data is from bouts since July 1st, 2015 and teams will only be included in the rankings once they have played a bout during this period.

It is very interesting to see where we are at so far this year.  A couple key points with the top of the rankings, it is important to remember that Rose City has a bad loss (129-193) to London in early August and that is included in the rankings.  Also, Gotham had an incredible “Regionals” outscoring Angel City, Montreal and Queen City 1,054-133.

Other stats I found interesting and worthy of note.  Atlanta and Jacksonville currently hold the two toughest schedules so far for the 2015-16 season.  There are currently 6 teams ranked in the Top 100 that are averaging more points per bout than Gotham, but the highest ranked is Royal City at #74.  The V Town Derby Dames out of Visalia, CA  currently have the 4th best points scored average and the best points allowed average of Top 100 teams but are only ranked #88.

Now for the brand new Offensive and Defensive Efficiency Rankings.  As the world of sports gets more and more data driven I spent the last few months trying to find a new way to look at derby and provide teams with a bit of insight to themselves, and their opponents.  Taking a bit of inspiration from MLB and Sabermetrics I developed methods for determining a teams Offensive and Defensive Efficiency based on the points scored, points allowed, and opponents strength.

This really provides a bit further analysis to what a teams potential strengths and weaknesses are.  It also goes deeper than just looking at points, by taking into account the opponents strength I can tell you that if you score 100 points vs Texas your Offensive Efficiency will rank you higher than scoring 100 vs Santa Cruz.  What I really hope is that this will provide people with a different perspective on just how good a team is and allow for us to look for bout match-ups with a different eye.

Just some quick observations before you read thru the rankings.  Of the top 20 teams, Atlanta has by far the biggest spread between their Offensive and Defensive ranks.  Defensively they are much further along than their offense at this point and I would normally chalk that up to their opponents (Texas, Tampa, London, and Denver) but all of their opponents have higher or equal Offensive ranks than Defensive.  As I look all the way down at #55 I come across Ft. Myers who has used two very good wins against Gold Coast to really propel their Defensive rank all the way to #16.  With all data based rankings you will almost always find someone that is a little out of place, and with limited data sets (only 2 bouts so far for them) it is not that surprising.  Their 362-25 win in August will help them a lot, but I do not expect their future bout to allow them to sustain that rank.

The Streak!!!

November 6, 2010…Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 was still two weeks from arriving in theaters.  We had just started grooving to new hits like “Like a G6” and “Raise Your Glass.”  And Glee was still good, well maybe, it was just the start of the 2nd season.  The sporting world too had been having its moments.

Reggie Bush became the first player in history to forfeit the Heisman, Brett Favre was the starting QB for the Minnesota Vikings (Im from Wisconsin so you have no idea how much that still hurts), and Sebastian Vettel was about to become the youngest F1 champion ever.

But in the Derby world, this was the last time Gotham lost a WFTDA sanctioned bout. (*Note, all bout stats are provided by our good friends at Flattrackstats.com).  It was the semi-finals of the 2010 WFTDA Champs and the end result saw Gotham lose to eventual 2010 Champion Rocky Mountain Rollergirls 113-79.  They bounced right back the next day with a 162-51 win over Philly and it all began.  Gotham amassed 66 straight WFTDA wins over the next 5 years, with their only loss being a non-sanctioned bout against Your Mom in June of 2013.  To put some perspective on the sheer number of wins in a row, the current leader in consecutive wins (only 2015 playoff teams included) is Rose City at 6.  But now lets also look a lot deeper into this streak.

  • Consecutive Wins: 66
  • Number of Different Teams Defeated: 28
  • Most Played: Denver & Philly (8 each)
  • Most Points Scored: 624 vs. Long Island (4/21/12)
  • Fewest Points Scored: 140 vs. Oly (11/13/11)
  • Most Points Allowed: 173 vs. Texas (11/10/13)
  • Fewest Points Allowed: 8 vs. Carolina (9/28/12)
  • Largest Margin of Victory: 561 vs. Queen City (10/2/15)
  • Smallest Margin of Victory: 2 vs. Victoria (11/7/15)
  • Average Score: 284-82
  • Number of Times Score Margin was Less Than 50 Points: 7
  • Number of Times Score Margin was More Than 400 Points: 7

When done, The Streak lasted just over 5 full years and deserves a true place alongside some of the other greatest streaks in sports.  Just look how it compares (list is mostly US based but I threw a few others in there as well):

  • NCAA Basketball: UCLA Bruins (Men’s) 7 Consecutive Championships (1967-73), 88 Consecutive Wins (1971-74); Connecticut Huskies (Women’s) 90 Consecutive Wins
  • NBA Basketball: Boston Celtics 8 Consecutive Championships (1958-66)
  • Cycling: Lance Armstrong 7 Consecutive Tour de France (cheating or not that’s still crazy)
  • College Football: Oklahoma 47 Consecutive Wins (1953-57)
  • Soccer: AC Milan Unbeaten in 58 Consecutive Games (1991-93)
  • Formula 1: Michael Schumacher 5 Consecutive Championships (2000-04)
  • Tennis: Martina Navratilova 74 Consecutive Wins (1984)

Time will only tell just truly how great this streak was, but we all should agree that we witnessed something truly special.

Derby Math Update

I know it has been awhile, and here is a bit of an update to where I have been, where Im possibly going, and what you can expect from Derby Math.  So I am going to use this blog to just be very honest and get some things out there.

Sometimes I just really dont like Derby.  And I know that I have always been a bit of an outsider in the derby world (or at least have felt that way), but the reason I quit writing about derby is because I got to the point that I really just didn’t like it.  Now dont get me wrong, the sport itself I love.  Every little bit about the actual sport is amazing, but it is/was the things that come along with the sport that just really turned me off and needing to step away.  And so that is what I did.  The politics, the drama, whatever you want to call it just got to the point where Derby (and especially writing about Derby) just wasnt any fun anymore.  I work 45-50 hours a week(not including my weekend reading of legislative updates) in the health insurance industry as a financial analyst trying to assist companies with the extreme complexities of the US Health Care system and the ever changing rules/laws provided by the Affordable Care Act.  Derby is supposed to be fun, something I could be involved in that let me get away from things for a bit.  Now I’ll be the first to admit when I was coaching that I forgot about that a bit, but spending the beginning part of the 2014-15 year writing as Derby Math it came back.

But then as Derby Math really got going leading into the 2015 WFTDA Playoffs it all went away again.  Im not going to get into all the details, but I will state that when people of “power” think too highly of themselves it pushes other people away.  The fun got sucked out of Derby Math and honestly it started to feel like a job and well I already have one of those.  So I plugged away to get thru the end of the Rankings Year because I became just too invested at that point to stop.  I had to see if it would work.  All in all I would say that it did, and I had a huge number of followers (at least I thought it was a good amount based on the stats I was seeing).  For me it was exciting to see teams progress thru the year and it really brought a new twist to just how intense each weekend could be with rankings switching.

Now I can tell you I wont be doing weekly updates this year.  I still havent figure out exactly what my involvement in derby will even be.  I love my local Brewcity Bruisers and could see myself trying to get involved with them in someway again.  Im sure I will start doing something with Derby Math as well, not sure exactly what though.  Maybe I’ll get back to actual blogging and trying to be more thought provoking instead of just providing numbers.  Whatever it is I need Derby to be fun, not a job.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has kept in contact or reached out to me.  I may not have always been the best at responding but you all mean a lot to me.  Derby can be the most amazing and frustrating thing at the same time (competitive bouts are just amazing) and I hope I can find that fun again.  I’ll keep all of you posted on the developments of Derby Math and thank you all again for your support.

WFTDA Playoffs Announced – So does Derby Math Rankings work???

So here we are, did Derby Math Rankings actually work?  Could you accurately produce rankings on a weekly (or close to weekly) basis to show how teams are really setting up for the upcoming playoffs.  Im going to go with a big YES on that one.  My goal was to never be perfect, those who have been here thru the whole year know that my goal was to be close and give teams a good idea of what their rankings will be come playoffs.  I’ve discussed there will be a margin of error involved due to my methods, and it proved to be slightly higher than I anticipated from a WFTDA Score perspective, but I think you will see that not only was I able to come pretty close with just the Top 40 (which is easier due to the wide range between teams) but you will also see that I was able to be pretty close with most of the Top 100.  For those looking for a full breakdown of the playoffs check out the WFTDA website.

But for these purposes I am going to show you exactly how Derby Math did with the Top 100 as projected on July 1st.  (For ease purposes I am going to remove Oly from the projections and just move everyone up a spot.  And for the record, I had both Oly and SoCal’s rankings correct at the end of the year.)

As you will see below 24 of the 40 D1 teams rankings were perfect and the other 16 were only off by one placing.  That isnt too shabby.  Better yet is that I correctly picked the correct seed for 31 of the 40 teams.  Again that shows just how good the rankings were at being able to give a good idea (again not perfect) of where a team will end up.

D2 was a little harder as there are half as many teams, but I still accurately picked 10 of the 20 seeds correctly.  There were a couple of bigger misses as Santa Cruz, Sacred City, Emerald City and Chicago Outfit all came in at 2 away from their projections.  With the incredibly tight race that happened at the top of D2 this year that wasnt that unexpected.

And then going down the rest of the Top 100 you will see that a majority of the teams were pretty close to their projections, with the biggest exceptions being teams that played unranked teams right at the end of the season.  Without being able to see an initial ranking (or knowing the WFTDA Strength Factor Challenge score) it was a bit hard to get them down just right.

I’m not going to make a huge post tonight as I know you all are incredibly excited for the actual playoffs coming up, but just remember for 2016 that Derby Math can help you get a good projection of where in the overall playoff spectrum your team may fall.

So tonight is a good opportunity to take a look back at the first half of 2015 and see how my beginning of the year predictions are playing out.  Below I will re-post my predictions from January and follow them up with little updates.

1.  WFTDA’s 2015 Playoffs will be the last in this current format.  This is one that I have felt for a long time.  After watching all Top 12 seeds advance to Championships this year and seeing that the Non-US presence of top teams is leading to some teams having to make 2 Trans-Atlantic/Trans-Pacific trips in such a short period is eventually going to make this format incredibly difficult and costly.  With costs becoming more and more of an issue (some would argue it has always been an issue and is just getting more publicity now) I just do not see a system that requires teams to make multiple playoff trips in short order lasting very long. — It looks like I will be wrong on this one, but to my knowledge they havent announced the 2016 Playoffs yet so there may be time for a change.  At least I know that WFTDA is taking a close look at the travel costs.

2.  There will be a lot of suggesting/complaining that WFTDA should hold a part of their 2016 Playoffs outside of North America, but it wont happen.  I thought WFTDA did a very good job with WET this year and there is definitely a very good place for non-North American teams.  But as I mentioned a little above, financially it makes more sense to have one or two teams make the trip to North America vs having 8-9 teams traveling overseas.  Out of my current Top 62 (my rankings, not WFTDA’s) only 6 are based outside of North America.  If WFTDA did something where they broke things down and rankings used in January or something were used I could see it as a possibility, but right now I feel many teams would decline such an invitation due to the costs.  — Again still not announced, but I completely stand by my early statement.  The only change is that now there are more than 6 non-North America teams in the Top 60, but this will all come down to do make more teams travel across the ponds.

3.  WFTDA is going to make a major announcement regarding safety.  This one is really nothing more than a gut reaction.  Right now I would lean towards something related to concussions and standardizing some things around them, but again this is nothing more than a gut feeling.  — This one is a kind of correct.  You could view the Officials not equipment checking as being safety related, but I still feel there is something bigger coming.

4.  Gotham will lose a bout, and the world won’t end.  Not knowing Gotham’s schedule makes this a bit harder to predict, but I think between some retirements and teams getting closer to them this is the year it happens.  They are still one of the top teams, see #5, but I believe that as we saw last year there are teams right there with them.  — Yeah I could be very wrong on this one.  But Rose City is looking incredibly good.

5.  The four #1 seeds will be Gotham, Bay Area, Rose City, and Denver.  Not going out on a huge limb here, but I do believe there are at least 3 teams that will vie for that 4th #1 seed.  Denver, Texas and Victoria will all have a good say in who it is and it will really come down to the teams the schedule, but I just think Denver will get the spot.  — Only got half right here.  Bay Area fell a bit more than I thought and London really performed a lot better.

6.  Three teams will get to play at home during the 2015 WFTDA Playoffs.  I actually feel pretty comfortable with this one.  I dont think Burning River makes the playoffs this year so they are out.  Detroit will be D1 so they wont play at home either.  Tucson and Omaha may make D2 playoffs, but I just dont see them getting all the way up to D1. That leads Jacksonville, which is pretty easy, and Dallas for D1 playoffs.  I fully expect Dallas to not only make it back to playoffs this year, but skip D2 and go directly to D1.  And finally Minnesota will make Champs and play in front of their home crowd.  So there are the three teams.  — Looks like I will be safe for the first part, then it is just up to Minnesota if they can make it to Champs.

7.  At least 10 of the 12 D1 Champs teams will return this year.  I may be going out on a limb a bit, but I think we will see at most 2 new teams.  If I had to pick them, Im going with Jacksonville and Montreal as the 2 new teams.  — This one is still yet to be seen but Jacksonville looks like a very good bet, but it might be Arch Rival sneaking in instead of Montreal.

8.  After seeing 6 teams score 600 or more points in a WFTDA sanctioned bout in 2014, no teams will reach that number in a single bout in 2015.  This is almost just as much a wish as it is a prediction.  There are no winners in a score like this and the WFTDA points awarded to each team is almost never worth it to either team.  As teams get better and knowing competition level this will hopefully be a thing of the past.  — I was so close on this one.  Only 1 bout so far saw a team score 600 points, that was the June 13th bout with Leeds (669) vs. Vette City (79)

9.  More teams will drive to D2 Playoffs than fly this year.  D2 has been dominated by teams in the Midwest as of late and I dont see that changing much this year.  Plus WFTDA did a great job of picking 2 cities that are very centrally located based on the likely teams to participate in these playoffs.  — This is still looking like a decent prediction as about half the teams are from the Midwest US.  I will be judging this if a team is located with a 10hr drive of their playoff location.

10.  Brewcity Home Season – The Crazy 8’s will lose a bout this year.  With a 9-bout win streak, over 2 seasons, currently going I am going out on a limb and saying they lose one this year.  Last year most of the bouts were not very close, but as Maiden Milwaukee showed in the championship bout (it went into OT for those not familiar with BCB) they can be beat.  The season starts January 17th and if you are in the area please come and check it out.  — This happened in the semi-finals as the Crazy 8’s were upset by the Rushin’ Rollettes, who then went on to win their first championship in 5 years.

Final 2014-15 DerbyMath Rankings & Playoff Projections

292 Teams, 1,120 Bout.  Its been a heck of a year.  Now Im sure there were probably a missed bout here or there due to using a manually run FlatTrackStats.com, but it really has all come down to this.  We will have to wait and see but I think a good chunk of my playoff projections are safe.  As I had mentioned in the past I am projecting a margin of error of 4-6 points, but after WFTDA’s latest blog I am actually thinking that may be a bit high and the margin may be closer to 3-4.  As an analyst who spends all day in numbers that is a huge difference.  But I know none of you are here to read about that, lets see how the Seeds are shaping up for the 2015 Playoffs.

All of the D1 #1 Seeds listed I feel are safe.  Denver made a good effort this past weekend to get up there, but I see them solidly as a #2 Seed.  The #2 Seeds get a little interesting as Denver, Bay Area and Texas all are very secure, but the last D2 spot is within the margin of error and could be either Jacksonville or Angel City.  It shouldn’t matter which order they are in as they will likely play each other for a spot at Champs either way.  The rest of the #3 Seeds look safe, as do the #4 Seeds.

The next real spot up in the air is the final #5 Seed as Detroit’s lead over Windy City is within the margin of error.  And there still is the case of Sun State that I mentioned last week as they are a true wild card and could end up anywhere from a 5-9 seed depending on the Weight given to a couple of their bouts this past month against new teams.  The #6 Seeds look safe and that is a very impressive year for Dallas after missing Playoffs last year.

The #7-#10 Seeds look great and I predict that some of those first round bouts will be the bouts of the Playoffs.  Those teams look very evenly matched and I can’t wait to watch them.  The real question is who is going to be #40.  Im predicting Sacred City will take the spot, but you will see that Tri-City is very much in the margin of error.  But I do believe that Sacred CIty will truly get that final D1 spot.  Of course all of this assumes Oly participates this year.

On the D2 side of things, it looks like we are in for two amazing Playoffs again.  There really isnt that one team this year that is just so much better than the rest.  The top team in D2 in my rankings is Tri-City who just lost to Chicago Outfit and beat Brewcity.  But yet in May Brewcity beat Chicago Outfit.  As of right now those are a #1, #4 and #10 Seed.  If anyone tells you who is going to win D2 this year they are lying, or have some secret people in Vegas doing things we dont talk about.

And again it all comes down to who is in, and who is out.  SoCal, as has been mentioned, has not reported any bouts to FTS and will not be participating so that moves Brandywine into the final spot.  Ann Arbor, Bear City and Calgary all played this past weekend with hopes of moving up to that final spot, but none got all the way there.  That being said, Brewcity, Brandywine, Ann Arbor, Bear City, and Calgary (barely) are all within the margin of error.  If Oly participates only 2 of those two teams are in and the other three will have to wait until next season.

So where does Derby Math go from here?  Well Im going to get started on the 2015-16 spreadsheets as those bouts will be starting up soon.  I’ll provide some insight and predictions for each of the playoffs similar to last year when I was still using the Weebly site.  I also think I will do a 2015 Predictions mid-year report pretty soon.  But really it is a huge wait and see on if what I did worked.  I really hope it does, and if so it can be a great tool for teams to help themselves with where they want to end up (the average opponent rankings has already gained some very good discussions).

Updated DerbyMath Rankings – Sweden Attacks Again and D2 #10 Seed Mayhem

Welcome back again DerbyMath fans.  It was a crazy weekend and for the 2nd weekend in a row it was a team from Sweden making the big moves.  I have promised a new feature and it will be here this week, just not yet tonight.  You will notice a new column in the rankings below, Average Opponent Rank, and it will work just as it sounds.  It will show the average (released) WFTDA rank of a teams’ opponents thru the year.  Unfortunately I didn’t get all the formulas and coding done for tonight so check back later this week for it to be added.

Now, on to the rankings tonight.  As you can see below, Stockholm jumped up 9 spots and is now in position to be a #4 seed.  We also saw Windy City drop down to a #6 seed and if playoffs were today they would be matching up with possibly Philly or Minnesota in the first round.  Its crazy how much things can change in a year.  There were a few other D1 changes, but the last one of note was Tri-City dropping to #41 and Sacred City moving up to #40.  These teams are well within the Score margin of error (I’m estimating a flex of 4-6 points max depending on when teams played in playoffs last year) and it could easily swing either way.

The big D2 story is No Coast moving up to #59 (#9 Seed) and into what I consider a safe spot to make it to Playoffs.  The #10 seeds though are really up for grabs.  Brewcity and Brandywine seem to have the inside track, but they are not outside of the margin of error in the rankings (4-6 points) and we could see Calgary, Bear City, Ann Arbor or Sin City sneak in there as well.  I wish I could be more sure of those rankings, but its just that close and should tell teams you cant take one single bout off and every point matters.

There is one final team I want to discuss as I have them currently as a #7 Seed, its Sun State.  They had a great trip earlier in the year but then recently played some bouts back home against teams that were not yet ranked.  The issue is I dont know what bout weights are going to be given to those and it really could impact their rankings a lot.  I feel they are safe to be D1, but they could be anywhere from a #5 to #9 seed.  We will just have to wait and see.
